Tremors on Mars indicate the planet’s ‘active’ core

The InSight mission, from NASA,detected that Mars has motions like Earth or Venus and that it is “not as dead” as it might seem.

The spacecraft identified earthquakes that suggest “internal activity on the planet”, contradicting the version that Mars was a little at the end of its life, with a little active core. The machine detected earthquakes that scientists attribute to circulations of magma, from molten rock, in the crust of Mars at depths of 15 kilometers to 50 kilometers.

So far, the spacecraft has identified more than 1,300 “marsquakes” — the tremors that occur on Martian soil — the most recent was magnitude 5. InSight has also located regions prone to these tremors on the red planet.

The InSight mission brings a new look to this data, in addition to confirming with its seismic study that the planet is very much alive, although it is not possible to observe any active volcanoes.

The images of the desolate surface of Mars, obtained by the spacecraft of this NASA mission are misleading because although “the main volcanic activity of the planet dates back to 3.5 billion years, it is not so dead”, says Clément Perrin, physicist at the planetology laboratory. and Earth Sciences at the University of Nantes, France.

The information collected allowed scientists to measure the depth and composition of Mars’ crust, mantle and core.

“While we still have a lot to learn, the evidence for possible magma on Mars is intriguing,” says Anna Mittelholz, a postdoctoral researcher at Lausanne Polytechnic in Switzerland.

The InSight spacecraft, which has been on the planet since 2018, is expected to be replaced as the seismometer is expected to stop working in the coming months. Your solar panels, covered in dust, will no longer produce enough electricity to run.
