Lula mourns the death of Hebe de Bonafini, leader of the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo

The leader of the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo Association, Bonafini Hebe, died this Sunday (20), at the age of 93, in Argentina. Hebe was a co-founder and symbol of a movement of mothers formed in the 1970s to collect information about children kidnapped, tortured and disappeared during the bloodthirsty military dictatorship that ruled the country between 1976 and 1983 and left 30,000 dead.

On Instagram, the president-elect of BrazilLuiz Inacio Lula da Silvalamented the death of Hebe: “Their struggle and perseverance continue to be an example for those who believe in a more democratic world.”

The Argentine government, under President Alberto Fernandez, declared three days of official mourning.
