See how the ‘cheap’ rooms of 200 dollars that Qatar offers for the World Cup

Affordable compared to five-star hotels, rooms at the Fan Village in Doha, Qatar, to accompany the World Cup, cost around US$200 a night. The rooms with two single beds, Wi-Fi, air conditioning and fridge, are located in containers lined up side by side in rows, with letters and numbers, in a field covered with synthetic grass, in a location close to the airport.

The rooms housed the workers who built the stadiums for the 2022 World Cup. Before, there were about 4,000 units, which were expanded to 7,500 to house those who arrived at the World Cup at the last moment and are looking for an economical option. A tent works on the same property where they sell food, coffee, pharmaceuticals and even fans.

“The air conditioning and wi-fi work, the shower too. It has two small windows to let in a little light. And the door closes celebrates an Argentine who is staying at the place.

He explains that Qatar has built other utilitarian housing areas for temporary residents: Asian Town or Industrial Area, which are permanent camps for migrant workers who do most of the construction work and services in Qatar. World Cup organizers applied the same concept to give fans a roof over their heads.

Other accommodations are more comfortable, like the Al Khor, located a 40-minute drive north of downtown Doha, next to the beach. There, World Cup tourists stay in canvas tents decorated with furniture, TV and fridge, as well as shower.

Al Khor has pools and restaurants, a small outdoor mall and a “fun zone” with fire pit and big screen TVs. Prices there exceed $400 per night. At the opposite end of the spectrum is Caravan City, a collection of 1,000 square white trailers on wheels that start at $115 a night.
