When the husband inherited a farm, Sonia Bonato says that ‘he had to learn everything from scratch’. First, she went to rural producer meetings with her husband. Afterwards, she took over the farm’s business – which she calls the ‘company’. Sonia was the first woman to integrate committees in the Rural Union of Ipameri (GO) and one of the first to assume a board within Aprosoja (GO).
In this exclusive interview, she talks about the challenges of the sector and the barriers she had to break down as a woman in a typically male environment. Sonia also talks about the 7th National Congress of Women in Agro, which started timidly, with just 700 women, in 2016. “This year, there are more than 2,500 women from all over the country gathered to share experiences and lessons learned”account.
She is an ambassador for the Midwest Region and talks about the joy of the face-to-face meeting, after 2 years of a pandemic. “As I am an ambassador, women come to me. So there are women from the South, the North, the Northeast, we are 5 ambassadors (…) We are already very good friends and we got together so that these women could get to know the Congress“, account.
